Fuchsia

Fuchsia in Colombia

The following list of Fuchsia species known to occur in Colombia was extracted from the Missouri Botanical Gardens (MOBOT) Tropicos 3 database. Other sources have not been investigated yet and there are probably more specimens and locations represented in Colombian and other herbaria.  The elevation ranges given are based on those from specimen sheets. They are probably a good general guide but I have not seen focused distributional and ecological surveys for these species. More links links to photos and other information will be added in the future. If you have suggestions for good links please leave a comment.

Fuchsia boliviana Carrière

This shrubby Fuchsia is used in gardens at Santa Elena.  This town is located east of Medellin at of altitude of approximately 2400 meters. It also grows along the banks of the Quebrada Santa Elena or Santa Elena Creek. I don’t know if it occurs here as a native but based on information in the Missouri Botanical Gardens Tropicos database it has been collected on both sides of the Medellin Valley at similar elevations. Several collectors have mentioned the possibility that it has become naturalized.

The plants here have bright red flowers. I have not seen any of the White and red form.

23/08/2009 Today I planted some seeds of F. boliviana collected at Santa Elena last weekend. First attempt at growing Fuchsia from seed.

28/08/2009

First signs of germination. Root and/or cotyledons exiting seed coat.

01/09/2009 Cotyledons are now upright. it looks like germination was around 90%

15/10/2009 The seedlings have reached the two true leaves stage. I kept the seedlings in Medellin until two weeks ago. September was very dry and I did not want to take a chance on drying them out. I think the weather down here is warmer than they really like. They were getting to be a bit yellowish and their growth rate was very slow. They now are at the finca under cooler conditions. The color has improved a lot.

Fuchsia canescens Benth.

This is a high elevation Fuchsia which mostly occurs at elevations between about 3000 and 3450 meters in Colombia. It has been collected from the Departments of Caldas, Cauca, Huila, Nariño and Valle de Cauca.

Fuchsia caucana P.E. Berry

Fuchsia caucana has been collected at elevations between 2350 and 3675 meters in the Departments of Cauca, Huila and Nariño.  The Tropicos database only lists specimens from Colombia.

Fuchsia corollata Benth.

Most of the collections of Fuchsia corrollata from Colombia are from between 3000 and 3500 meters. One is reported from between 2000 and 2400 meters. It has been collected from the Departments of Cauca, Nariño and Valle de Cauca.

Fuchsia corymbiflora Ruiz & Pav.

This species has been collected in the Department of Nariño at an elevation of 3000 meters. Many more specimens from Ecuador and Peru are on record.

Fuchsia crassistipula P.E. Berry

Collected from the Departments of Antioquia and Tolima at elevations between 2400 and 2800 meters. MOBOT only lists specimens from Colombia. The three collections from Antioquia are from near the town of Jardin which is located southwest of Medellin.  It is possible that this species may occur nearer to or within our area.

Fuchsia cuatrecasasii Munz

Collected from the Departments of Cauca, Huila and Putumayo at elevations between 1400 and 2500 meters. Most of the specimens are from above 2000 meters.

Fuchsia dependens Hook.

Fuchsia dependens occurs mostly in Ecuador but two specimens are known from the Colombia. These are both from the southern Department of Nariño, adjacent to the border with Ecuador.

Fuchsia gehrigeri Munz

Collected from northwestern Department of the Guajira in the Perija Mountians at Cerro Pintado. These specimens are from between 2550 and 3000 meters. The majority of specimans are from Venezuela.

Fuchsia hartwegii Benth.

Collected widely in Colombia including Antioquia. The collections from Antioquia are mostly from the area around Jardin. The noted elevation range from 1700 to 2800 meters, with most coming from above 2400 meters.

Fuchsia hirtella Kunth

This Fuchsia is wide spread in Colombia but represented at MOBOT by only 15 collections. It has been found in Antioquia, Boyaca, Cundinamarca, Quindio, Tolima and Valle de Cauca.  The collections from Antioquia is near to the Medellin area. Elevations range from  2160 to 3140 meters.  Most of MOBOTs specimens are from Colombia but include one from Brazil.

Fuchsia hybrida hort. ex Siebert & Voss

Hybrid Fuchsias are frequently grown in Colombia. They are best adapted to the higher, cooler regions but I have seen some good specimens in Medellin (1600 meters). They do very well at our finca which is located at about 2400 meters.

Fuchsia macrostigma Benth.

Collected in southern Colombia from the Departments of Cauca, Nariño and Valle de Cauca.  These specimens are from locations between 1500 and 2500 meters. Many of these are at relatively low elevation for this genus in Colombia.

Fuchsia magdalenae Munz

This species appears to be endemic to the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta in the northern Department of Magdalena.  It has been collected from locations between 2670 to 3350 meters.

Fuchsia magellanica Lam.

One record from Boyaca at 2500 meters. This however seems doubtful given the species typical range much to the south and as the specimen did not have either flowers or fruit.

Fuchsia nigricans Linden ex Planch.

Collections at MOBOT are from locations south of the Medellin area at elevations between 1800 and 2670 meters. It occurs in the Departments of Quindio, Risaralda and Valle de Cauca.

Fuchsia pallescens Diels

This species occurs in Southern Colombia in the Department of Cauca where it was collected from elevations between 2000 and 2580 meters. Most specimens are from Ecuador.

Fuchsia petiolaris Kunth

Fuchsia petiolaris is wide spread in Colombia and has been collected from the Departments of Antioquia, Boyaca, Cuandinamarca, Norte de Santander, Quindio, Santander, Tolima and Valle de Cauca. Collection elevations range from 2700 to 3900 meters.

Fuchsia putumayensis Munz

The name of this species is a little deceptive in that of 25 collection from Colombia listed by MOBOT only two are from the Department of Putumayo. The rest are from more western Departments such as Antioquia, Choco, Riaralda and Valle de Cauca. Most are from the western portion of Antioquia and the Choco.  The elevation range is from 1350 to 2500 meters with the majority lower than 2000 meters. This is relatively low for Fuchsia in Colombia.

Fuchsia quinduensis Kunth

This species has been little collected and I found no specific information on where it occurs.

Fuchsia sessilifolia Benth.

Fuchsia sessilifolia has been widely collected in Colombia from the Departments of Antioquia, Caldas, Cauca, Huila, Nariño, Putumayo, Quindio and Valle de Cauca. The elevation range is between 1850 and 3000 meters.

Fuchsia smithii Munz

MOBOT lists one collection of this species and it is from Boyaca, Colombia at 3200 meters.

Fuchsia sylvatica Benth.

This species mostly occurs in Ecuador but there is one collection bearing this name from Caldas in the Department of Antioquia, Colombia. As this is far from its otherwise listed range the specimen should be carefully reviewed.

Fuchsia venusta Kunth

This is a wide spread species in Colombia with collection from the Departments of Antioquia, Cundinamarca, Huila, Santander, and Tolima. One collection is was made at Guarne in the Antioquia which is very near our finca. I anticipate finding this plant near the house.  The elevation range in Colombia is between 2180 and 2720 meters.

Fuchsia verrucosa Hartw. ex Benth.

This species has been collected most frequently in and around the eastern range of the Andes in Colombia. It occurs in the Departments of Caqueta, Cundinamarca, Huila, Meta and Norte de Santander.  The elevation range is from 2190 to 3200 meters.

Fuchsia vulcanica André

Fuchsia vulcanica has been collected in the Department of Nariño near the border with Ecuador. The elevation range is between 2800 and 3800 meters. Most collection are from Ecuador.
